Heatwave

1

In town, heat ricochets off wall and pavement,
an invasion force that pins you down
with soundless sniping. The streets
no longer secure, you run for cover, keep
to the safer side, hesitate before risking a move
into the line of fire. Wonder if at nightfall
that distant rumble will become an aerial attack.
Sound splitting the sky apart inside your head.
